About the Item

Patinated bronze group, Bergers d'Arcadie (Shepherds of Arcadia), by Eugene-Antoine Aizelin, featuring a maiden and a shepherd mourning at a tomb. The woman is wearing a flowing tunic and her head is downcast. The shepherd is wearing a woven hat and holding a shepherd's staff that is resting on a stone bearing an inscription in Greek. The tombstone has a partial inscription, also in Greek. Signed and dated: E. AIZELIN 1867. Marked on the base: Réduction Mécanique A. Collas. The subject of our bronze repeats the theme of a famous painting by Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), particularly his second version of the painting titled Et in Arcadia Ego, completed circa 1638-1640. Also known under the name Les Bergers d'Arcadie, it had a significant impact on the history of art. The pastoral painting shows a woman and three shepherds gathered around a tomb, which bears the inscription: Et in Arcadia ego, meaning "Even in Arcadia, I (death) exist." For ancient Greek and Roman poets, Arcadia represented a sort of earthly paradise, an idyllic world, enchanted, with perfect happiness. The Latin inscription on the tombstone of the painting is a reminder of mortality, that even in what may seem like an ideal setting, none can escape the destiny of all mortals. Eugène-Antoine Aizelin (French, 1821-1902) was a successful and renowned French sculptor. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts, he pursued a successful career and produced classically styled sculptures. He received numerous commissions from the State and from the city of Paris for the decoration of public buildings. Most notably, he was involved in three great Parisian building projects of the Second Empire: the Louvre modifications, the Opéra and the Hôtel de Ville. He also exhibited his sculptures, which were widely reproduced in bronze, many of which were cast in the foundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), circa 1870.
