About the Item

The biscuit ceramic statue is a reproduction of the Laocoon head belonging to the famous Laocoon group, itself a Roman marble copy of a Hellenistic sculpture. The discovery of the Laocoon group brought about a revolution in cultural and artistic history. The statue was found on January 14, 1506, while digging in a vineyard on the Oppio hill. Attending the excavation were the great sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti and the architect Giuliano da Sangallo, among others. Numerous reproductions have been made of the original group from the 1500s to the present. The one for sale here can be traced back to the 19th century and represents the detail of Laocoon's head. Immortalized in the group is the scene in which Laocoon, high priest of Troy, is entangled, along with his two sons, by two huge sea serpents, sent by Pallas Athena after he objected to the Greeks' gift.
