"Black Male with Upraised Arms, " Nude Sculpture of African Figure by Fenton

About the Item

Highly unusual in Beatrice Fenton's oeuvre, this dramatic figure of a Black male figure with his arms raised and crossed at the wrist -- either in celebration, worship, agony or adoration, it's not clear -- may depict an African or an African American. Fenton is best known for sculpting a long line of garden and fountain figures in bronze -- often children at play -- which were and are widely sought after by collectors. However, she also sculpted adult portraits and dancers, so this figure fits into Fenton's larger pattern of figural sculptures. There is no evidence that this plaster was ever cast in bronze, so it is our belief that this piece is unique. It is mounted on a curving piece of walnut, so it is a finished piece ready for display.

The Smith brothers moved from their native Kentucky to New York in the early 1930s, and proceeded to establish a studio that brought together almost every major figure in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, mentoring artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Gwendolyn Knight, Selma Burke, Ernest Crichlow and Robert Blackburn. The Smiths captured the night life of Harlem, including musicians and actors such as Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Eartha Kitt, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Count Basie, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Hattie McDaniels, Zora Neal Hurston, Step n' Fetchit, Pearl...

    By Franz Seifert
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...
