About the Item
A 19th Century bronze of the bronze Seated Hermes
Based on the life-size bronze Roman statue found at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum in 1758, and now at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The Roman statue is believed to be based on a lost Greek bronze original of the late fourth or early third century BC, in the tradition of Lysippos.
The figure is represented as a short-haired and beardless youth, nude except for his winged sandals. He sits on a rockery, leans forward and turns his upper body to his right, his right hand on the level surface of the rock, his left over his left thigh, his left leg bent at the knee and his foot rests back, his right leg extended and bent slightly so that the heal of his foot is placed at the edge of the rockery. The classical ancient sculpture captures perfectly in human terms and in a highly naturalistic style, the attitude of a youth who is clearly resting from a physically taxing activity, in this case the constant travel by flight of the winged Greek messenger god.
