About the Item

Bronze cast with a brown patina, signed Sauvage, a replica of the Roman marble sculpture from the time of Emperor Tiberius, attributed to Praxiteles and discovered during excavations in 1792 at Gabii, Italy, and housed in the Louvre. Artemis, goddess of the hunt and nature, wears a short chiton with wide sleeves. The deity is depicted as she goes to fasten her cloak, offered by worshippers: her right hand holds a fibula and brings a section up to her chest. This movement causes the collar of the chiton to slide down, exposing her left shoulder. Her head is turned slightly to the right, but her gaze is unfocused. Her wavy hair is tied back by a headband tied at the top of her neck, forming a chignon. The work is signed on the body "Reduction of the Antique Sauvage V.E.B." Charles Gabriel Lemire, known as Sauvage (1741-1827), was a French sculptor who exhibited in Paris from 1808 to 1819. He won a medal in 1808. Diane de Gabies is a charismatic work whose Greco-Roman neoclassical style exudes grace and elegance. ****** Period: Early 19th century Very good condition.
