About the Item

A late 19th century Italian Grand Tour bronze of the ‘Seated Hermes’ after the antique, raised on a carved dove grey marble base. Also known as ‘Resting Hermes’ or ‘Seated Mercury’, this beautiful bronze is attributed to the Giorgio Sommer Foundry, Naples. At a similar scale to the antique, it is larger in scale than other depictions on the market, making it a rare find. Here, the young Greek deity, Hermes, with narrow shoulders and lean muscles, is seated nude on a rock in a resting position. One hand is placed on the rock and the other on his knee, with other leg extended before him, each ankle heeled with the wings that the Greek God Hermes and Roman God Mercury are often associated with. With its attractive patination, rare scale and complimenting marble base, this antique bronze Seated Hermes is an impressive sculpture for a display plinth or console, particularly those with Greek, Roman or neoclassical interest. Seated Hermes Obtained by a 19th century collector on their Grand Tour of Italy and Europe, this bronze is after a larger scale bronze original discovered at the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum in 1758. Now residing at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the antique is thought to be a 1st century Roman copy of a late 4th/early 3rd century BC Greek original attributed to the Greek sculptor, Lysippos.

F. Barbedienne 'The Solider of Marathon' Bronze After J. P. Cortot
By Jean Pierre Cortot, F. Barbedienne Foundry
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An excellent large late 19th century antique bronze of ‘Le Soldat De Marathon Annoncant La Victoire’, also known as ‘The Soldier of Marathon Announcing the Victory’, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne after a model by French sculptor, Jean-Pierre Cortot (1787-1843). The Barbedienne foundry produced this model in four editions. This bronze is an example of the second largest. Inscribed ‘Cortot 1834’, it is signed ‘F. Barbedienne Fondeur’ and impressed with the official stamp of the Collas et Barbedienne foundry reading: ‘Reduction Mecanique, A. Collas Brevete’. With its attractive patina and impressive scale, this bronze is a beautiful sculpture for any interior seeking artworks that are particularly exceptional. The Soldier of Marathon Inspiration for this bronze is rooted in ancient Greek mythology. It tells the story of the solider Pheidippides who, following the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, ran 40km from Marathon to Athens to deliver the triumphant news before collapsing from exhaustion. The story inspires the modern-day marathon run...
