About the Item
Bronze with a dark brown patina, on a sea green marble base, signed J. Garnier on the base.
Jean Garnier (1853–1910) was a sculptor, enameller, and chaser originally from the Vendée region. A self-taught artist with a comprehensive knowledge recognized by his peers, he also created enamel jewelry.
"Diana the Huntress" is a work depicting the Roman goddess of the hunt, war, and the night, in her simplest attire, clad only in a long drape, struggling against the wind.
She brandishes her bow, her knee resting on a rock.
Her hair is surrounded by the emblem of the moon, which she protects.
Diana, a feminist figure, inspired many courtesans, such as Diane de Poitier, who saw in her only strength and conviction.
The artist highlights feminine courage through this mythological work, striking in its realism. ********
