Bronze sculpture “Laurent de Medicis” after Michelangelo, 19th

About the Item

An important 19th-century bronze sculpture Michelangelo (1475-1564). This Florentine sculptor, painter, architect, and poet is known for his monumental works such as the ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel. This bronze represents the marble statue adorning the tomb of Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492). Both were very close friends, and Lorenzo de' Medici, known as the Magnificent, was much more than a patron to Michelangelo. The respect these two men had for each other is still evident, as if engraved in the marble of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, where the man who was considered the defender of Arts and Letters—Lorenzo the Magnificent—remains buried. This important work will appeal to lovers of the Italian High Renaissance, as well as to art lovers. ******** Period: Mid-19th century Excellent condition.
