Bronze Sculpture "Sustraiak" by Larrañaga, Signed & Numbered, 2001

About the Item

Bronze sculpture titled Sustraiak, created by renowned Basque artist Paulino Larrañaga in 2001, signed and numbered 13 of a limited edition of 50 pieces. Originating from the Basque Country in northern Spain, this work embodies the cultural and social roots of its region. The piece is structured with three distinct faces: an industrial worker holding a key and gear representing the industry; a woman and a child holding a book, symbolizing family and education; and a farmer with a hoe, representing agriculture and the connection to the land. The word “Sustraiak”, meaning “roots” in the Basque language, is engraved into the base, emphasizing the central message of identity and cultural heritage. The sculpture rests on a solid marble base, contrasting elegantly with the green patina of the bronze and highlighting its handcrafted quality. This is a meaningful and collectible piece of contemporary Basque sculpture. Dimensions: 26 x 10 x 11 cm. Monumental Version: Inspired by this work, in 2006 Larrañaga created a monumental version of Sustraiak, installed on the riverbank of Axpe in Astrabudua (Erandio). This public sculpture, made in patinated bronze, stands ten meters tall and weighs over three and a half tons. It represents three archetypes of labor—fisherman, industrial worker, and farmer—symbolizing the economic and cultural pillars of the local community. About the Artist: Paulino Larrañaga Longarte (Eibar, April 13, 1918 – San Sebastián, March 3, 2011) was a prominent Basque sculptor, engraver, and painter. He began his artistic training at the age of 13 under Jesús Berecibar "Txopa" and Jacinto Olave. Throughout his life, he combined art with teaching and served as president of the Eibar Art Association. His work spans wood carving, bronze sculpture, and printmaking, always deeply rooted in Basque identity and tradition.
