About the Item

An important bronze with a brown patina, signed on the base by Jean Baptiste Germain (1841-1910). This French sculptor, a student of Dumont and Gumery, received honors from his peers during the 1900 World's Fair. "The Girl with the Broken Jug" depicts a young woman standing beside her broken jug on the ground, her expression bewildered, clutching her long pleated dress with both hands. This work carries a moralizing warning. Indeed, the broken jug is a well-known symbol evoking the loss of virginity. This work, which takes on another dimension, will delight above all for the finesse of its craftsmanship. ******** Period: Late 19th century Excellent condition.
