Bronze Statue Amour Captif by Felix Sanzel, 20th Century

About the Item

This is a patinated bronze sculpture of "Amour Captif" by Felix Sanzel, with "Amour Vainqueur par F. Sanzel Statuaire, Médaille d'or au salon" marked on its base. The model was originally exhibited in marble at the Paris Salon in 1868 and earned Sanzel a prestigious medal for his work. Signed by Fx Sanzel, this statue stands at H. 2.40 m. In this interpretation of captive love, an adolescent figure appears tied to the sheath statue of god Terme rather than little Cupid being responsible for their bondage mishap as commonly depicted before that time period . The young man has palpable wings and clenched fists while wearing an expression filled with anger from feeling helplessly controlled; meanwhile God wears crown made out vine leaves mixed honeysuckle which complimented equivocal smile further intensifying annoyance felt towards him from kidnap situation imposed upon them both without consent or explanation- leaving viewers transported back ancient times because it echoes similar themes channeled through older works inciting feelings intense emotion reflective experiences faced relating unforgiving relationships where someone tries making other person helpless underneath control dictatorial regime powered domination dynamics giving no care how they feel whatsoever just so long tyranny responded quickly enough any form shown dissatisfaction hence culmination presentation within artwork itself──Théophile Gautier wrote about these ideas present here perfectly well when he analyzed Mr.Sanzel's piece stating: "'Mr.Sanzel group quite ancient idea feeling'" (Gautier ,pp 414-415).
