Extremely affecting, with the charm of great Folk Art, this "Mother and Child" is a rare piece. Roger Capron, obviously working in his favorite vernacular idiom, modeled the figures without fine details -- adding those when painting the glaze on to the clay. Thus the facial features of the two figures, the decoration of their garments, and the delineation of fingers on the mother's hands are represented almost entirely in the glaze. The primitivist, self-consciously naive style of this piece reflects the lasting influence that Jean Derval had on his friend Roger Capron, though the traditional art Derval sought inspiration from was early medieval, while Capron tended to go back only two or three hundred years for aesthetic stimulation. Signed "CAPRON/VALLAURIS."
