Charles Auguste Lebourg Orientalist Bronze Sculpture

About the Item

Our patinated bronze by Charles Auguste Lebourg (1829-1906) depicting a child playing with lizard is signed in the cast and inscribed "MEDAILLE D'OR ET DATE 1853". On reverse is black ink is the word COMO. Lebourg first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1852. This important work debuted at the Salon in 1853 and won a medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. He is perhaps best known for the sculptural design of the Wallace fountains which can be found in almost every quarter of Paris and in cities throughout the world. The artist was commissioned to design these fountains by Sir Richard Wallace, a wealthy English patron of the arts who lived in Paris. Following the destruction of Paris' aqueducts in the Franco-Prussian War, clean drinking water was scarce. Wallace recognized the need for a remedy, and thus funded the design, construction and installation of over 100 fountains throughout Paris beginning in 1872. His statues in bronze and marble won medals and achieved great recognition at the Paris Salon and World's Fairs throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. His artwork can be found in the collections of Musée d'Orsay and Musee D'Arts De Nantes.
