About the Item

An extraordinary and very old carved wood temple sculpture of Quan Yin, the revered Bodhisattva of Compassion, seated gracefully atop a recumbent elephant. Retaining its original polychrome surface, this figure radiates both serenity and power. The figure is richly adorned in flowing robes with floral and geometric motifs in shades of red, green, gold, and turquoise, all accented with traces of gilt. The facial expression is calm and meditative, with delicate features and a benevolent gaze. The elaborate headdress, crowned with flowers, completes the divine presence of this sacred figure. The elephant, symbolizing wisdom and strength, is rendered with remarkable character, its expressive eyes and curling trunk harmonizing with the figure above. Together, the pairing embodies protection, compassion, and spiritual guidance. Likely dating to the late Ming or early Qing Dynasty (17th–18th century), this piece was originally housed in a temple setting. Its age and devotional use are evidenced by natural wear, weathering, and areas of paint loss that enhance its authenticity and presence. Dimensions: 33” high x 25” wide x 15” deep (approx.) Medium: Carved wood with original polychrome pigments. This is a rare survivor of monumental scale and powerful presence. An exceptional work for serious collectors of Chinese Buddhist art.
