Coppia di mori. Venezia, Seconda metà del XIX secolo

About the Item

Coppia di sculture reggi torciera raffiguranti due mori veneziani, una figura femminile e l’altra maschile. In posizione speculare, di lieve avanzamento, con una mano sorreggono un vassoio mentre nell’altra, sollevata sopra la testa, una cornucopia con piatto reggi-lume. Sono abbigliati con caratteristiche vesti con gonnellina corta, panneggi e turbanti, decorati con motivi orientaleggianti ed esotici. Poggiano su basamenti dalla sezione ottagonale e concavi, ornati con piedi ferini e teste leonine. Intagliati in legno di cirmolo, sono laccati in policromia, con gli abiti ricamati a bulino e in parte dorati. La raffigurazione di mori era tradizionalmente radicata nella cultura figurativa lagunare, ancora prima del “Michelangelo del legno” Andrea Brustolon, del quale vanno senza dubbio ricordate le opere conservate presso il Museo di Ca’ Rezzonico, come le poltrone del Fornimento Venier, dove dei mori fungono da struttura portante delle gambe e dei braccioli, oppure il portavasi con moretto nudo e incatenato. La nostra coppia di sculture appartiene a quella produzione che si diffuse nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, nel contesto dei revival delle correnti stilistiche del passato e in particolar modo pertinente con quello che fu definito Neobarocco. Le figure sono infatti caratterizzate da una lavorazione a pastiglia per la texture dei tessuti, modalità esecutiva tipica dell’epoca, nonchè da un sapore esotico e orientaleggiante nelle decorazioni delle vesti, chiaramente una scelta di gusto espressione dell’eclettismo, dettato dalle eterogenee influenze figurative che si registrano sul finire del XIX secolo. Sono noti diversi altri esemplari con i quali sono possibili interessanti confronti, come la coppia di morette reggicandelabri dei Museo d’Arti Applicate del Castello Sforzesco. Come segnalato nella scheda di catalogo, figure analoghe si possono trovare nel catalogo di vendita di corrispondenza della ditta Sarfatti, pubblicato nel 1887. Questa non era però l’unica realtà a essere specializzata nell’intaglio ligneo di gusto neobarocco: in questi anni sono infatti note anche le botteghe di Valentino Besarel (1829-1902), Vincenzo Cadorin (1854-1925), Marco del Tedesco (attivo nel 1887) e Francesco Taso (attivo nel 1878).
