About the Item
A dignified and poignant bronze by America's greatest sculptor of the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, this unique piece by Paul Manship depicts young David in ancient Israel, with cape and Classical cap, standing in watchfulness near his flock of sheep. Somewhat anachronistically, David is shown with his faithful hound -- though the evidence that shepherds were accompanied by sheepdogs in Biblical times may be scant. When this sculpture was made in 1914, Manship had yet to achieve the fame and acclaim he would gain by his commissions for Rockefeller Centre and other major buildings, but his mastery of the human form and his love of Classical imagery is already well established. Manship executed three variations of this subject, although this is the only example showing a standing David with his dog by his side. This sculpture was sold by Christie's in 1984. It was cast by Roman Bronze Works in New York, and the foundry mark is visible around the base.

He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
