Demeter Haralamb Chiparus '1886-1947', "Woman and her Greyhounds", 1920s

About the Item

Superb sculpture by Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947) of an elegant woman with her greyhounds. Group in gilded and patinated regule, the oblong base in black marble. Signed on the terrace. Excellent condition, some slight oxidation. Dimensions: H. 46 cm, L. 67,5 cm, D. 18 cm Sent via a company specialised in art shipping. Born in Dorohoi in 1886, into a bourgeois family, Chiparus left his native Romania for Italy at the age of 23. There he studied for three years with the Florentine academic sculptor Raffaello Romanelli before leaving to perfect his art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied from 1912 under the direction of sculptors Antonin Mercié and Jean Boucher. He was then immersed in the splendor of the Roaring Twenties and specialized in chryselephantine sculpture. From the Greek chrysós (???s??) meaning "gold" and elephántinos (e?ef??t????) meaning "ivory", chryselephantine sculpture appeared in Greece around the 6th century B.C. and is characterized by the use of ivory (generally to represent flesh) and gold assembled on a wooden frame. The technique and term were revived in the Art Deco period for gilded bronze and ivory statuettes, which are characteristic of the period, their production having declined´ after the Second World War. In 1914, Chiparus exhibited for the first time in Paris. His creations at the time were essentially groups of small figures, and in particular children, presented in a style more realistic than Art Deco. He opened his Parisian studio in 1918, after the war, and exhibited regularly in the Salons, sharpening his eminently personal style. During the 1920s, the excavations in Egypt had an influence on his production, which saw the appearance of sculptures inspired by the Land of the Pharaohs. They will rub shoulders with the inspiration that the artist finds in the Russian ballets, the fashion of the Roaring Twenties or the French theater. His distinctive style is now expressed in graceful, slender figures - mostly female - with supple, sophisticated postures. A man of his time and a savvy entrepreneur, Chiparus always made sculptures of modest size, making Maurice Guiraud-Rivière's advice his own: "Today's sculptural art is found in trinkets. Large spaces are rare and living conditions have changed. We must imitate, without ever losing sight of our own inspiration, the sculptures of Tanagra, who should be our masters". In doing so, Chiparus was successful during his lifetime, even though there is little mention of his work at the exhibitions and salons that were the rhythm of Parisian cultural life at the time. At the end of the Depression and in the context of the Second World War, the sculptor seems to have turned definitively to animal sculpture, returning to the Salon in 1942 with a "Polar Bear" and an "American Bison", then another bear and his famous "Pelican" in 1943. Demeter Haralamb Chiparus died in Paris on January 22, 1947. A paragon of decorative luxury and the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, his sculptures remain recognizable among all by the great detail of the costumes and the ineffable feeling of movement inspired by his dancing characters.
