About the Item

Juan Olaguibel who was born and died in Mexico City (1889-1971), studied sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos. He joined the revolutionary movement of 1910 and collaborated in the liberal periodicals of Dr. Atl which were defining a new nationalistic and artistic identity. Subsequently Olaguibel travelled to the U.S. where he gained fame for a series of caricature sculptures and the tenor Enrique Caruso, who became his Mecenas, was the force behind Olaguibel’s good fortune. After an extensive stay in Europe, Olaguibel was enthusiastically welcomed by Vasconcelos, the education minister at the time, and he gave his support to much of the public work Olaguibel was to create. Olaguibel who embraced and was inspired by the classical canons, is credited with numerous monumental pieces in Mexico and various abroad. But it is ‘La Diana Cazadora’ which earned him the most fame. In 1942 the president of Mexico, Manuel Avila Camacho, initiated a beautification program and commissioned Olaguibel and the architect Vicente Mendiola to create a fountain to be placed on the Paseo de Reforma, Mexico City’s grand avenue. The chosen theme was Diana, the roman god of the hunt, but rather than hunt the beasts of the forests, her arrow aims for the stars in the sky, and hence the true name of the sculpture, “The Flechadora de las Estrellas del Norte." (The Archer of the North Stars). Helvia Martinez Verdayes was 16 years old when she posed for the sculptor. She received no pay but the privilege of having her body immortalized. The nudity of the statue caused quite a scandal however and at one point a bronze ‘skirt’ was actually placed on the sculpture. (The original suffered some damage and was moved to Hidalgo requiring a second cast for the Mexico City site). “La Diana” as it is commonly referred to today seems to Stand defiantly, creating one of the more imposing juxtapositions on this main artery of Mexico City, Reforma. The bronze being offered is signed and dated 1942-1945 and was the study for this beautiful rendering.
