About the Item

Rudolf Henn was born on 1 July 1880 in Olsbru¨cken (Landkreis Kaiserslautern). He was the son of a miller. Already in elementary school the teachers noticed his artistic talent, which he from 1901 on perfected as a student of the 'Akademie der Bildenden Ku¨nste' ('Academy of Fine Arts') in Munich under painter and sculptor Syrius Eberle (1844-1903) and sculptor and medallist Heinrich Wadere´ (1865-1950). Numerous recommendations and a scholarship which he was awarded in 1906, bear witness to a great artistic creativity looking for expression. A year later he accompanied as a sculptor an ethnographic expedition to the Dutch East Indies which gave him the opportunity to model natives for German museums. After returning from this trip, he opened in 1908 in Munich (Hessstrasse nr 44) his first workshop, which he ran successfully until the beginning of World War I, which interrupted his artistic development. During this time before WWI he created in Guben the 'Fischma¨nnchenbrunnen', also called 'Brunnenbuberl' in the magazine 'Kunst und Handwerk' ('Arts and Crafts') of 1908/1909, showing a naked young child holding a fish spouting water in each raised hand. From this bronze figure several casts were made. On the 'X. Internationalen Kunstausstellung' ('X. International Art Exhibition') in Munich in 1909, a copy was sold to an unknown art collector. Three years later, Felix Felixovich Yusupov, a Russian aristocrat, prince and count but best known for participating in the assassination of Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916), acquired during the 'Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung' ('Great Berlin Art Exhibition') another copy for his private collection. And another cast was owned by one of Henn’s two daughters. At the beginning of september 1913 the 'Fischma¨nnchenbrunnen' in Guben was inaugurated at the entrance of the Museum. The local newspaper 'Gubener Zeitung' praised the work of Rudolf Henn with the following words: “Auch dieses sein ju¨ngstes Werk, das den Vergleich mit den besten Darstellungen des kindlichen Ko¨rpers nicht zu scheuen braucht, zeigt von neuem seine hohe ku¨nstlerische Begabung und ein den Stoff in vollendeter Meisterschaft beherrschendes Ko¨nnen. … Wie die Nu¨rnberger ihr „Ga¨nsema¨nnchen“, so werden die Gubener das neue „Fischma¨nnchen“ lieb gewinnen und es mit zu den heimatlichen Wahrzeichen za¨hlen, die man dem Fremden zeigt und auf die man mit Recht stolz ist.“ ("Even this latest work, which doesn’t need to fear comparison with the best depictions of a child's body, is showing anew his great artistic talent and his thorough skills. ... Like the Nurembergers cherish their "Ga¨nsema¨nnchen" ("Gooseherd"), the inhabitants of Guben will adore the new "Fischma¨nnchen" and concider it as one of their landmarks that they proudly show to a foreigner."). In addition to large-scale monuments and fountains in public spaces, which Henn created in stone and bronze, his oeuvre included also small-scale bronze sculptures. Henn exhibited in Berlin in 1905, in Düsseldorf in 1911 and 1913 and in the 'Mu¨nchener Glaspalast' in 1906 where he a.o.th. showed a Diana-sculpture, in 1907, 1912, 1914 and 1921. The artist was in 1915 recruited as a soldier and was wounded two years later. After the war, he moved his workshop to Kaiserslautern, where he married in the 1920s. The marriage produced two daughters. In the late 1920s the worldwide economic crisis also struck Germany. Rudolf Henn decided to emigrate in 1929 to the United States, one year later followed by his family. They lived in New York where the artist created for several companies numerous smaller and larger sculptures. In 1936 and 1937, Henn was involved in the artistic design of the condominium 'Harlem River Houses' in the scoop of the 'Treasury Relief Art Project', where he worked under the guidance of Heinz Warnecke with Theodore Barbarossa, Erwin Springweiler and Richmond Barthe´. After a busy artistic life, Henn died in New York City early July 1955.
