About the Item
An early 20th century bronze figural sculpture titled 'Vainquer' on a tinos green marble base by French sculptor, Eugène Marioton (signed). Translating to 'Winner', this sculpture depicts a heroic youth with torso bare and a quiver of arrows at his feet, one arm triumphantly raised with laurel bough in hand, the other holding a bow.
Signed 'E. Marioton', the 'Vainquer' model is one of Marioton's signature works, reproduced by several notable French foundries of the period. We believe this is one of the larger scale versions of this piece, if not the largest produced. Further elevated by the addition of the marble base, this brilliant sculpture will sit in pride of place on any pedestal, side table or console.
Eugène Marioton (1857-1933)
Eugène Marioton was a French sculptor and medalist. Born in Paris, he was brother to sculptor, Claudius Marioton, as well as artist, Jean Alfred Marioton. Both Eugène and Claudius studied under French sculptor, Auguste Dumont, and Eugène was later a pupil of French sculptors Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux.
Specialising in figural works of bronze executed in the romantic style, Eugène first debuted his works at the 1882 Paris Salon des Artistes Français, where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1922. Throughout his career, Eugène was awarded several prizes for his work including bronze medals at the 1889 and 1900 Exposition Universelle, a travelling scholarship and a young artist grant from the General Council of the Seine in 1884.

F. Barbedienne 'The Solider of Marathon' Bronze After J. P. Cortot
By F. Barbedienne Foundry, Jean Pierre Cortot
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An excellent large late 19th century antique bronze of ‘Le Soldat De Marathon Annoncant La Victoire’, also known as ‘The Soldier of Marathon Announcing the Victory’, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne after a model by French sculptor, Jean-Pierre Cortot (1787-1843).
The Barbedienne foundry produced this model in four editions. This bronze is an example of the second largest. Inscribed ‘Cortot 1834’, it is signed ‘F. Barbedienne Fondeur’ and impressed with the official stamp of the Collas et Barbedienne foundry reading: ‘Reduction Mecanique, A. Collas Brevete’.
With its attractive patina and impressive scale, this bronze is a beautiful sculpture for any interior seeking artworks that are particularly exceptional.
The Soldier of Marathon
Inspiration for this bronze is rooted in ancient Greek mythology. It tells the story of the solider Pheidippides who, following the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, ran 40km from Marathon to Athens to deliver the triumphant news before collapsing from exhaustion. The story inspires the modern-day marathon run...
