About the Item

A very fine marble sculpture of Arpocrate also know as Harpocrates, the Greek god of silence. Often depicted with lotus flowers and a horn, the sculpture in question was carved by the Italian Francesco Pozzi (Italian, 1779 – 1844) around the first quarter of the 19th century. Francesco was born in Rome a sculptor and engraver, and In conjunction with Coppa and Perini, he engraved some of the plates from the statues in the Clementine Gallery at the Vatican. He also engraved a portrait of Pope Pius VI, As a sculptor he made a Latona with the infants Apollo and Artemis in Chatsworth House (1824) and the copy of a stolen satyr in the Fountain of Neptune, Florence. Arpocrate has had a few mishaps in his life, his extended finger has come away at some point and been repaired, his neck as shown is broken and the head does come away. It's been repaired with copper pegs some time ago, but has never been cemented back on to his shoulders and is easy to lift off and replace. A extremely fine marble by a fine sculptor, for a similar example please refer to The Opulent eye Auction Christies 2012 Measures: 70cm in height 61cm in width 42cm in depth.

Late 17th/Early 18th Century Polychrome Tobacconist Figure Sign Folk Art Carving
Located in Lowestoft, GB
A large carved and polychrome painted tobacconist's figure almost certainly 17th or early 18th century For a related example see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Page 412, plate 436. Originally this may well have been a tobacconist's shop window figure. For a similar, but slightly earlier unpainted example, see Sotheby's, The W. J. Shepherd collection of treen, 30th November 1983, Lot 393, illustrated in Pinto "Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking", plate 1. Carved wooden figures, often painted, were placed outside tobacconist's shops as signs from the 17th century onwards. The earliest of these figures is the 'black boy' or 'blackamoor'. 'At the sign of the black boy' or 'at the sign of the blackamoor' was a popular address for tobacconists since the early 17th century. The 17th century figures...
