Exceptional polychrome glazed ceramic totem pole by Marcel Giraud, Vallauris
Rare, large ceramic piece by Vallauris artist Marcel Giraud. The totem represents a multi-armed creature on two legs. The enamel work is magnificent. The ceramic is decorated with scarified motifs.
Its size makes it a real eye-catcher. It invokes the imaginary, indian divinities and fantastic creatures. This is a superb ceramic.
It is in very good condition. Note two original firing cracks on the glaze of the two feet, which are on the surface and do not call into question the integrity of the piece.
The ceramic measures 62 cm high and 38 cm wide.
The top of the ceramic fits in and out of the two feet.
It is signed.

Marcel Giraud
Marcel Giraud was born in 1937 in Vallauris, France. He left school at the age of 13 to become an apprentice potter at the workshop of Blaise Rubino. He later worked at several other workshops in the area until he opened his own studio in 1960, creating mostly utilitarian ware. Since 1975, Giraud has taken up painting, sculpture and continues to create sculptural figures, animals and other decorative objects in his retirement.
