About the Item

Art Reproduction in terracotta after an 18th century model, manufactured circa 2016. Menacing cupid. Falconet's seated cupid is sometimes referred to as Menacing cupid due to its nickname, "Beware, be discreet", found in the 19th century sales catalogues. It is the first of the Erotica statues that made Falconet one of the most fashionable sculpteurs of his time. The plaster model was presented at the 1755 Salon, however a marble version was quickly commissioned thereafter by Madame de Pompadour. The success of Falconet's statue far exceeded the artist's expectations. In addition to the variations sculpted by Falconet himself, the masterpiece was reproduced many times both in sculpture but also in paintings. The celebrated statue appears in paintings by Vanloo and Fragonnard , to cite just a few of the more famous artists. Besides the original terra cotta statue, Madame de Pompadour acquired two marble statues. The first statue exhibited at the 1757 Salon was later displayed in the Parisian home of the King's mistress, the former Hotel d'Évreux, presently Hotel de l'Elysée. This is the same statue that one can still admire at the Louvre. The second statue was placed in the Chateau de Bellevue. Measures: 86 x 47 x 74 cm. We also know that Falconet offered a plaster version to Voltaire, who composed the two mysterious lines engraved on its pedestal: Whoever you may be, here is your master. He is, was and always will be.
