About the Item

A large, unusual and hard to find mid century large architectural home structure executed in earthenware pottery as a wall sculpture. It is hand made and hand glazed in earth tones of brown, black, and dark blue glazes, 1950, attributed to Atelier Helmut Schäffenacker. Substantial Dimensions: 17 inches tall and 21 inches length Handmade and hand glazed. Only the first work of art of its kind we have seen. Provenance: old German collection Glaze: Very attractive rich blues and yellow and cream tones are hand-painted A rare form. Only one. History of Atelier Helmut Schäffenacker: Helmut Friedrich Schäffenacker (1921-2010) was a renowned and prolific German ceramic artist, recognized for his innovative and traditional techniques in ceramic artistry and known as a master of plaques and sculpture. He also worked in other mediums to produce paintings, prints and public art works. Brutalist architecture was popular 1950s to 1970s, evolving from modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century. The term originates from French word for -;raw- as Le Corbusier described his choice of material béton brut, raw concrete. British critic Reyner Banham coined the term "brutalism" (originally "New Brutalism") to identify this as a significant emerging style.
