About the Item

An exquisite example of a late 19th early 20th century hand carved sculpture of a semi -robed nude signed F. Vichi. The statue portrays a coy yet sensuous female figure, bare breasted and partially draped in a gown with a delicately ruffled lace bodice. She is depicted in the act of dressing herself, with her hair styled in a romantically upswept fashion, featuring side braids and neatly tied into a bun. The woman is resting her bare feet on a fringed pouf, placed atop a characteristic Oriental rug. Ferdinando Vichi ( 1875- 1945) was part of the distinguished and gifted circle of Tuscan sculptors linked to the historic Galleria Pietro Bazzanti in Florence, established in 1822. His marble and alabaster works reveal both his technical mastery and his deep reverence for the female form. French late 19th century spelter sculpture by Hippolyte Moreau fitted with original 1 7/8" thick rouge griotte marble base. Hippolyte was one of the famous Moreau brothers, all of whom were sculptors. He was born in Dijon France in 1832 and died in 1927. This statue, in a warm chocolate brown patina depicts a diaphanously dressed woman with flowing scarf overhead and winged cherob at her side resting on the crest of a wave and shell. Hippolyte Moreau exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français at the turn of the century and won a medal at the Universal Exposition in 1878 and another at the 1900 World Expo.
