French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Ormolu and Bronze Statue, Signed Moreau

About the Item

A charming and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and patinated bronze statue of young Cupid and Psyche, titled "DÉSARMÉ!", signed by Auguste Moreau. The beautiful statue is raised by a circular mottled patinated bronze base with a lovely central ormolu scroll with the French inscription "Désarmé" (which translates to disarmed). Above are Cupid and Psyche both draped in fine flowing garments. Cupid stands while the young Psyche is seated on a rock amidst water flora where the signature is displayed. Cupid is wearing a quiver with arrows and is attempting to kiss the young Psyche on the cheek. At the same time, Psyche is attempting to discreetly remove an arrow from Cupid's quiver behind his back. Lovely subject matter.

    Located in Dallas, TX
Pair 19th Century French bronze statues by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) are exemplary examples of the glorification of the simple rural life celebrated by artists in France during the Belle Epoque. A distinctive departure from rendering affluent families and lifestyles as dictated by the many patrons of art over the centuries, this informal movement gave a glimpse into the lives of everyday people. In this example, we have two young maidens, one carrying a bundle over her shoulder and a basket in her left hand, while the other totes a basket over her shoulder and a couple of protesting chickens in her right hand! Each maiden is modestly dressed...
