French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Patinated Bronze, Ormolu and Marble Statue
About the Item
A sensational French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble statue, signed Clodion. The statue is raised by a demi lune shaped moulded Rouge Griotte marble base with a fine beaded ormolu band. Above are two charming bacchanalian cherubs with laurel garlands in their hair, draped in flowing fabrics and seemingly playing with a wonderfully detailed goat. One cherub lays at the front of the goat with his right hand holding up the goat and his left hand holding a chalice. The other cherub stands with his feet planted firmly on the ground while he rears back to support the goat with a richly chased laurel garland. The goat stands on its hind feet with it's front hooves raised in the air and his head leaning downward. Wonderful rich patina and exquisite attention to detail throughout.
