About the Item

A charming and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze and ormolu statue, signed 'Rougelet'. The statue is raised by a circular base with a wonderfully executed ground like design and a tree truck. The whimsical and richly detailed cherub is draped in a flowing garment and holds a tambourine in one hand and an ormolu baton in the other. Benoît Rougelet (1834 -1894) studied under Duret and exhibited at the Salon from 1876, getting honorable mentions in 1887 and at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle, and a third class medal in 1892.
