French 19th Century Neoclassical St. Ormolu And Marble Statue Of Cupid & Psyche
About the Item
An exceptional and very high quality French 19th century Neo-Classical st. ormolu and white Carrara marble statue of Cupid offering a rose to Psyche. The statue is raised on a rectangular white Carrara marble base with a fine wrap around mottled border and beautiful pierced scrolled foliate mounts at each corner with impressive paw feet. Above is the wonderfully executed handsome Cupid shown as an unarmed adolescent, with short wings and wonderfully richly chased details in a superb satin and burnished finish. He is offering a rose to the charming butterfly who is allowing itself to be seduced and symbolizes the soul, Psyche in Greek. Psyche is frequently depicted as a butterfly as the Greek word for both butterfly and soul is psyche and meant to symbolize the complete union of spiritual and physical love. All original gilt throughout.
