About the Item
An extremely elegant French 19th century ormolu statue of Nereids, signed Claude-André Férigoule. The sculpture is raised on a circular base with a water and waves design. The nymph appears to be riding the waves, arms out stretched, holding a conch in her right hand. Nereids are sea nymphs, and symbolized everything that is beautiful and kind about the sea, and Poseidon's entourage. Represented as very beautiful barefoot girls, crowned with branches, wearing silk robes trimmed with gold. Claude-André Férigoule (1863-1946) Born in Avignon, was a renowned French sculptor, and student of Alexandre Falguière.
