French cubistic shaped figurative Art Déco sculpture sandstone signed ML GORDEE

About the Item

French sandstone sculpture from the Art Deco period. A man is sitting on the floor with his knees bent, his arms folded and his head tucked in. The posture suggests an intensely contemplative person. The surface of the sculpture is lightly brushed, the hair is finely structured, hands, feet and the lower smock are linearly structured. The stylized limbs give the object a cubic note. The expression is contemplative and lively despite the withdrawn posture. The sandstone appears clear and natural, the object has a calming effect and could also be somewhat reminiscent of Rodin's "Thinker". Object is signed by hand on the underside ML GORDEE

  • French Art Déco Bronze Antilope Scultpure on Stone Base by Max Le Verrier 1920s
    By Max Le Verrier
    Located in Salzburg, AT
Very finely crafted bronze sculpture from the period of French Art Deco. Attributed to the sculptur Max Le Verrier. The antelope is jumping, the dynamics and movement of the animal is very well captured in the depiction. The bronze is brown, the horns a little darker. The object rests on a stepped natural stone base which gives the whole a special sophistication. Biography Louis Octave Maxime Le Verrier, short Max Le Verrier (born January 29, 1891 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France; † June 6, 1973 in Paris, France) was a French sculptor. Le Verrier was the son of a Parisian goldsmith and jeweler; his mother was from Belgium. His parents separated when he was seven years old. He attended several boarding schools, including the École des Roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre. Against Max's wishes, his father sent him to study agriculture at Saint-Sever and La Réole. At the age of 16, he returned to Paris and took odd jobs to avoid working in agriculture. In 1909, he left France and moved to London for a short time, where he found it difficult to find work. Le Verrier worked at a flying school in Rendon, where he first serviced aircraft and then earned his pilot's license in 1913. During World War I, he saw action in a French bomber squadron beginning in February 1915. On May 25, 1915, he was shot down in a dogfight by a German fighter plane...

  • Sculpture Sandstone Carved Figurative The Thinker
    Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
The Thinker Mid-Century Modern, sandstone sculpture depicting a seated man, artist unknown This Mid-Century Modern interpretation of The Thinker interprets the pain, release and liberation associated with free-thinking. The man conveys vulnerability, tenderness and acceptance, his body yielding into the support of the chair creating a sense of rest and peace. Provenance: Private Collection acquired from The Hidden Gallery, Scotland Measures: Height 50cm.,20" Length 33cm., 15" Depth 22cm., 81/2" The Thinker - Auguste Rodin (1840 -1917). Cast made by Fonderie Alexis Rudier in 1904. Transfered to the musée Rodin in 1922. When conceived in 1880 in its original size (approx. 70 cm) as the crowning element of The Gates of Hell, seated on the tympanum, The Thinker was entitled The Poet. He represented Dante, author of the Divine Comedy which had inspired The Gates, leaning forward to observe the circles of Hell, while meditating on his work. The Thinker was therefore initially both a being with a tortured body, almost a damned soul, and a free-thinking man, determined to transcend his suffering through poetry. The pose of this figure owes much to Carpeaux’s Ugolino (1861) and to the seated portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici carved by Michelangelo (1526-31). While remaining in place on the monumental Gates...
