About the Item

The pretty dancer has short curly hair held back by a feather tiara, a skimpy bustier, her upper arms adorned with bangles and a skirt held in place by a pearl-studded belt that falls softly around her body. She is dancing with her arms stretched out diagonally to the side and one leg raised. Visible skin areas gilded, hair, clothing and shoes patinated, pearl trim with enamel drops, artist's signature ‘C. Binder’ on the back at the bottom of the skirt. The figure is screwed to the base with the stand foot on the high square, stepped, black-green and white marble pedestal with bronze mounting. Excellent, lifelike and detailed quality of workmanship. Designed by CARL BINDER (1881 - 1964) As the son of the owner of one of the oldest woodcarving companies in Brienz, Switzerland, Carl Binder first attended the cantonal school in Zug and then the School of Applied Arts in Winterthur. In 1900, he was in Geneva at the École des Baux Arts and two years later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. Inspired by his great contemporaries Rodin, Bartholomé and Desbois, the then barely 23-year-old made his public debut at the Salon National des Beaux Arts with his sculpture ‘Ivresse’ (Satyr with Bacchante) and was so successful that he was awarded the title of Associé, equivalent to a gold medal. A year later, he was even appointed Sociétaire, an honour that the Paris Academy only bestows on truly outstanding sculptors. The master, from whom the city of Paris purchased various works, is particularly credited with introducing wood sculpture, which was frowned upon or at least neglected at the time. Manufactured ca. 1920 most likely by a French bronze manufactory Bronze modeling and casting, gilding and enamel painting Dimensions: Total height: 54,0 cm / 21.25 in Hight of figure: 43,0 cm / 16.92 in Width: 23,0 cm / 9.05 in Depth: 13,0 cm / 5.11 in Weight: 6.080 grams / 214.46 oz / 195.49 troy oz Very good condition - Slightly rubbed in places, signs of age on the base and enamel drops.
