Gabon Punu Granary Door Panel on Custom Stand with Provenance
About the Item
A wonderful Punu wooden door panel (one of the original pair) with the iconic carved female figure circa mid-20th century. These door panels were used for granary in Gabon. The door features an idealized female figure with three-part coiffure and prominent body scarification markings on the front side. lots of evidence of in situ native use, an attractive patina as well as some old damages apparently from the installation of the hinges (see detail photos side and back). We believe that it is an authentic piece collective from the field, and it had been used by the natives. There is a collection series number 8670 marked under bottom edge of the door as shown. Displayed on a custom-made fine art stand with the maker's label Amyas Naegele remains underneath the base.
Provenance: Collection No.8670 from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson (1928-2013), an American abstract expressionist painter and African and tribal art collector and dealer. One of the pieced ordered auctioned in 2016 following Simpson's death and the legal dispute of this African Art Gallery.
