German Pottery Bust of a Black Boy
About the Item
This rare vintage German made sculpted bust is beautifully hand painted & dates from the early 20th century. It is a high quality terra cotta portrayal of a young black boy/man, impressively detailed with life-like facial features & strong muscular hands. He is wonderfully costumed in a pale, almost colorless, striped shirt & a wide straw hat. Details on this wide brim include a leafy twig of cherries. This, together with the empty basket he is holding, hints that the subject may be a harvester of the period. Though unsigned, the sculptor's prowess has created a piece that will enhance any room decor. It is an item that was not made for export & is incised on the base with a German phrase protecting its “copyright”. Condition is very good for its age, with minor wear & occasional nicks.
