Giltwood and polychrome half-relief representation of Saint Rococo. Spain, 16th

About the Item

Important bas-relief in carved wood with traces of gilt, in an architectural frame with two angels in the corners, representing Saint Rocco. Considered, among other things, the Patron Saint of dogs, because according to the legend, one of them licked his wounds and brought him bread when he was suffering from the plague, far from any habitation. A Montpellier native 14th century native, he used his knowledge as an ex-medical student and his thaumaturgical skills to help the poor and sick. Beautiful polychromy and needle work gilt. It needs a thorough clean-up. A few chips. Northern Spain, 2nd half of 16th century
