About the Item

Modernist nude bronze relief sculpture by Giovanni Schoeman from his London period (late 1960s-late 1970s). Featuring a kneeling nude woman in profile, unusually mounted on a thick rosewood plinth with custom-made black metal base. This Schoeman's sculpture is fascinating on several level. Straight geometric lines and original timeless patina, deconstructed into core parts with severe geometric or cubist representation, very typical of the Brutalist style of the period. Overlaid inscription on foot, not readable. Giovanni Schoeman (1940-1981), was a South African sculptor of great creative ability. He contributed to popularized the cold cast resin metal technique. Cold cast bronze is a composition of about 85% bronze powder with a resin blinder. The metal powder is mixed into the resin to form a creamy mixture and then poured into a mold. The resulting cast has the appearance of solid metal. Different metal powder like bronze, brass, copper or nickel can be used depending on the final effect desired. The remaining hollow cavity is filled with plain resin to give stability and weight. In the late 1960s, he used this technique in his London Studio of West Hampstead. His pieces were sold in the famous outdoor art markets at Hyde Park and Green Park. Schoeman later moved to Santa Barbara, California with the project to set up business and produce large-scale art, however this project never got off the ground. Schoeman was mysteriously murdered in 1981 by a hitman in a triple homicide along with his girlfriend and a business partner. Measurements: 8.50 in. wide (21.5 cm) x 15.38 in. high (39 cm) x 2.38 in. thick (6cm), total high with metal base is 19.32 in. (49 cm).
