Grand Tour French Bronze Model of the Sphinx on Verde Antico Marble Base, Circa 1880
A finely cast Grand Tour French bronze model of the Sphinx, mounted on a rectangular plinth of richly veined Verde Antico (serpentine marble), dating to circa 1880. Executed with great precision, the figure depicts the mythic guardian with leonine body and pharaonic headdress, rendered in dark brown patinated bronze. The smooth, tactile surface contrasts with the crisp chased details of the mane, necklace, and paws, demonstrating the high level of French bronze casting in the late 19th century.
The marble plinth is of particular note. Verde Antico, prized since antiquity for its striking bands of green, gray, and white, was revived in the 19th century for luxury objets d’art. Its pairing here not only enhances the aesthetic presence of the sculpture but also resonates with the Grand Tour’s classical spirit, recalling the material splendor of Roman villas and Byzantine churches.
The sphinx motif, long associated with knowledge, mystery, and protection, became especially fashionable after Napoleon’s Egyptian campaigns and subsequent archaeological discoveries. Grand Tour bronzes such as this were collected as markers of erudition and refinement, serving as souvenirs for travelers and as scholarly decorations for libraries and salons.
