A Grand Tour souvenir, Rome stage. Trajan's column, Italy early 19th century.
About the Item
A souvenir of the Grand Tour, Rome stage. Trajan's column.
The famous monument is representative of Rome, Caput Mundi, and the greatest empire of its time in its maximum splendor. Here the monument is represented in red marble with at the top the bronze statue of the emperor Trajan, winner of Dacia, now Romania.
The souvenir is made of red Venetian marble (to emulate porphyry?) and has a square base with three superimposed steps. Then a drum base with a wavy owl's bill profile in the center of which there is a circular plane drum. Above rises the fluted column culminating with a Corinthian capital. Above the capital there is a distinct plain drum with a slightly marked lower edge. This is the base of the statue of Trajan, Emperor of the World, with the globe in his right hand and his left arm raised. Rome, Italy, 1830-1850.
