About the Item

Guanyin. Enamelled porcelain. China, 20th century. With marks. A figure on an oriental-style polygonal pedestal decorated with vegetal elements and poly-lobed openings on the front, seated on a cluster of clouds, which also creates a small table on which sits a vase. Dressed in rich oriental attire, she is shown seated with her knees drawn up and her right arm (in the hand of which she holds a beaded rosary) resting on the knee of the same side. Note also the necklace and the diadem that adorns the headdress she wears. On the back is a square with characters, some of which are similar to those that appear on a seal on one of the pages of Qian Weicheng's ‘Manuel de cachets de l'Empereur Qianlong. This seal is actually an apocryphal one by Chen Wei, a sculptor of the Ming dynasty. Guanyin (or Kwan-yin) is the Chinese name for the Avalokiteśvara bodhisattva revered in Buddhism, who is associated with Compassion. Since the translation of the Lotus Sutra by Kumarajiva she has been a figure referred to in feminine form, and since then she has been increasingly depicted as a beautiful lady in white robes, and in popular devotion she rescues those who turn to her in times of trouble. In China, she was a male figure in iconography before the Song dynasty and from the 12th century onwards more commonly as a female figure; she is usually depicted holding a child, but other iconographies are also commonly seen (for example, in Fujian she is often depicted with a basket of fish). In the present case, the vase, which is often held in the left hand, is one of the Eight Symbols of Good Fortune (it contains pure water that relieves suffering, which is why it is sometimes shown being poured). As for the material it is made of, it is a type of porcelain with a fine coating and a characteristic white colour known as ‘blanc de Chine’ or Dehua porcelain (after the main centre of production, located in Fujian province). It is mainly characteristic of the Mingand Chi'ing (or Qing or Manchu dynasty) periods, and was made both for the Chinese domestic trade and for export (it reached Europe in such large quantities that it was even copied in Meissen and other centres; Japan, etc.).
