Incredible pair of large polychrome marble obelisks with Latin inlays - H 215 cm
Maker: Sculptors of the period
Period: Second half of the 19th century
Stunning pair of large polychrome marble obelisks with various inlays. First of all, their size is noteworthy: they are 215 cm tall! They come from a prestigious pharmacy in Venice, dating back to the late 19th century. They are unique because they are engraved with Latin words on the sides. "On one side, pleasure, on the other, good health (physical and moral), medicines give life, but evil is cured with art"—this is the meaning of the carved Latin words. The marbles used are Giallo Reale, Nero Portoro, and Nembro marble. The sculptures are composed of two modules, the top of which is removable. The base features lion's paws, and each side is inlaid. They have an extraordinary grain and patina, a very exclusive lot of great workmanship and quality. Unique and never before seen. Hard to find on the common market.
