About the Item

Indian Medieval Carved Wood Sculpture of Shakti Goddess Ca. 8th to 12th Century Dimensions: 21.50” high x 7 1/7” wide Weight: 4 lb An extremely rare Medieval India carved wood of Shakti Goddess of power and energy, wearing her classical crown and jewelry. Shakti refers to the manifestations of this energy, Shakt embodies the creative and auspicious powers, such as nature, the elements, music, art, dance, and prosperity. Shakti may be personified as the gentle and benevolent Uma, consort of Shiva, or Kali, the terrifying force destroying evil, or Durga, the warrior who conquers forces that threaten the stability of the universe. Goddess worshippers often view their deity as the all-powerful Supreme Being, second not even to a male god. There are enduring goddess traditions all over India, especially in West Bengal and south India. Goddesses symbolizing various aspects of power very often predominate in village culture. Village men, women, and children, when they pray for immediate needs, address a female, not a male.

An Indian Raj period carved figure of the Goddess Parvati, circa 1900
Located in Central England, GB
This superb hand carved sandalwood figure is Indian from the Raj period and dates to circa 1900. It depicts the Hindu goddess Parvati, who represents love, fertility and devotion. Parvati is beautiful. She is semi-naked and very ornate in her elaborate costume. She is holding her Deity son Ganesha, who is part human with an elephant’s head and is known in Hindu mythology as the remover of obstacles. This remarkable figure group is carved from solid sandalwood, the very material that Hindu mythology suggests Parvati made her son Ganesha from. The figure group is exceptionally well carved equal to what could be described in European circles as exhibition quality. The finely carved figure is raised and mounted onto an elaborate carved and moulded stepped stand made from matching figured sandalwood. This very fine piece of Hindu art...
