Italian 19th Century Patinated Bronze Statue of Augustus of Prima Porta

About the Item

A handsome and high quality Italian 19th century patinated bronze statue of Augustus of Prima Porta. The statue is raised by a circular base where the emperor stands proudly with his right arm raised. He is draped in a wonderfully executed flowing fabric and is wearing his armor which depicts the god of the sky and the goddess of the earth at the center. At his ankle is baby cupid pulling at his hem. Cupid was the son of the goddess Venus and Augustus traced his ancestry back to Aeneas, who was the founder of Rome and also the son of Venus. Cupid is said to be present in this bronze to remind us that Augustus is descendant from a goddess. The original Augustus of Prima Porta (Italian: Augusto di Prima Porta) is a 2.03 m high marble statue of Augustus Caesar, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, was discovered on April 20, 1863 in the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, near Rome now and is now displayed in the Braccio Buovo of the Vatican Museums.
