About the Item

A stunning Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue titled The Shepherdess signed Prof. C. Fantacchiotti Firenze. The statue is raised by a wonderfully executed ground design and rock from where the shepherdess is standing. She is draped in richly sculpted flowing period attire with a scarf over her head and a staff in one hand holding the other hand up to her eyes to shield them from the sun. At her feet is a charming and intricately detailed sheep grazing. Exquisite attention to detail throughout. Cesare Fantacchiotti was an Italian sculptor born in December 1844 in Florence and died in 1922. He was the son and student of acclaimed Odoardo Fantacchiotti and was a very productive sculptor producing many statues and groupings with his most famous to be The Thorn, The Shepherdess, The Sheep Keeper and The Morning. He made numerous busts of personalities from many nations as well as Dante and Leonardo Da Vinci, a grouping for a fountain in Kansas City, USA and the funerary monument for his father at Miniato just outside Florence. His work was displayed in Turino, Venice, the Royal Academy in London and in Berlin.
