"The Jewish Traders" Young Jewish Fur Trader Sculpture, Austria or Czech 1890

About the Item

"The Jewish Traders" or the "Young Jewish Fur Trader" sculpture from Austria or Czechoslovakia circa 1890. In Austria-Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the late 19th century, Jewish communities were integral parts of urban life and trade. Jewish traders, artisans, and merchants played important roles in the economy and cultural fabric of these regions, contributing to their multicultural character. The sculpture depicts a young Jewish fur trader dressed in the traditional garb of that period with furs hanging on his arm. This sculpture reflects the artistic style and social realism prevalent in Central Europe during the late 19th century. Artists of this period often sought to capture everyday scenes and diverse cultural identities through sculpture and other mediums. The sculpture is made of ceramic painted and crafted with attention to detail to capture the nuances of the trader's attire, expression, and ethnic features. Sculptors of the period aimed for realism and emotional resonance in their works. This sculpture was made in a period of significant social and political change in Central Europe, with the rise of nationalism and modernization. Jewish communities faced both opportunities and challenges during this time, contributing to the rich tapestry of multiculturalism in the region. "The Jewish Traders" sculpture serves as a cultural artifact that documents the representation of Jewish identity and economic roles in late 19th-century Central Europe. It is valued for its artistic merit, historical context, and portrayal of Jewish life and contributions to society. Original sticker and item number are present under the base of the sculpture.

A Bronze Figurine of Three Jewish Men in Conversation, Austria late 19th Century
Located in New York, NY
A Small bronze figurine of two Jewish men with several stereotypical physical features commonly attributed to Jewish men: large noses, sidelocks, and beards. They are wearing caftans (kaftans) belted by wide sashes at the waist. A caftan is a long-sleeved, ankle-length coat with an open-cut at the front. Many Eastern Polish and Western Russian Jews began wearing caftans fastened with wide, oriental-style sashes in the late medieval period. The garb later spread to Central Europe, but in place of the sash, a cord was used to close the front of the garment instead. These garments were often worn by peddlers and itinerant vendors who traveled the countryside and sold goods to the public. However, old prejudices stemming from the economic and professional restrictions placed on early European Jews, along with Christians’ disdain for the professions Jews were allowed to practice, formed an antisemitic stereotype of the greedy Jew who exploited Gentiles. This canard was often visually depicted as a Jewish peddler...
