A maquette sculpture titled ‘Standing Female' by the acclaimed British sculptor, John W. Mills. Made from ciment fondu with a patinated verdigris finish, this figure stands upon an integral shaped base.
This is truly an elegant piece for an interior display, as it strikes a pose to create a sense of movement: she stands tall on tip toes with crossed legs.
A picture of this sculpture features on the front cover of John W. Mill’s book ‘Sculpture in Ciment Fondu’.

John W. Mills (1933-2023)
John Mills was a highly celebrated English sculptor, celebrated across the globe for his contemporary statues, bronze figures and artistic maquettes.
Mills showcased a flair for sculpture from a young age, first exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1951 and then hosting his first one-man show at the AIA Gallery, London in 1959. Throughout his distinguished career, Mills went on to receive several prizes and accolades and many notable commissions.
Some of his most famous works include the monumental memorial to The Woman of World War II in Whitehall, London and the National Firefighters Memorial near St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.
Following the sculptor’s passing in 2023, the contents of John W. Mill’s creative studio at his family home in Hinxworth Place, Hertfordshire were dispersed. This sculpture formed part of this curated collection, from which we selected several pieces, offering a rare chance to obtain original works made by the artist, including sculptural pieces for garden, interior and exhibition.

David Backhouse (b. 1941) Nude Bronze Statue

This impressive near life-size bronze statue named ‘Bertha’ is made by British artist David Backhouse. It was originally made for his exhibition at the Alwin Gallery in London in 1979. It depicts a crouching nude female in spectacular detail and is inscribed with the numbers ‘1,1’ making it a one-off piece. Signed by the artist, this bronze sculpture has a beautiful patina and a dramatic stance reminiscent of designs associated with the Art Deco period. Considered one of Britain’s most respected sculptors, David Backhouse has a fascinating artistic career.
