About the Item
Large 31" Makonde Tree of Life Sculpture. African Family Tree. Hand Carved. Rare Folk Art of Africa. Traditional Wooden Statue.
The Makonde are an ethnic group from Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Their Tree of Life sculptures were especially sought after in the 1950s and 60s. The sculptures represent the family unit and are essentially family trees.
This particular Tree of Life was hand carved from a single piece of wood which still has it's bark intact in the back of the sculpture. The carving depicts a woman with many children around her with beautiful details. An exceptional example of Makonde artistry.

This very rare Pole measures 8" in diameter and stands 7.5 feet tall. This is one of the rare historic Totem pole that survived the late 19th century ban of Totem poles. Nearly all Totem-pole-making had ceased by 1901. Carving of monumental and mortuary poles continued in some, more remote villages as late as 1905; however, as the original sites were abandoned, the poles and timber homes were left to decay and vandalism. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, before the passage of the American Indian Religious...
