About the Item

Large 31" Makonde Tree of Life Sculpture. African Family Tree. Hand Carved. Rare Folk Art of Africa. Traditional Wooden Statue. The Makonde are an ethnic group from Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Their Tree of Life sculptures were especially sought after in the 1950s and 60s. The sculptures represent the family unit and are essentially family trees. This particular Tree of Life was hand carved from a single piece of wood which still has it's bark intact in the back of the sculpture. The carving depicts a woman with many children around her with beautiful details. An exceptional example of Makonde artistry. Measures 7" in width, 8" in depth and stands 31" tall and weigh about 25lbs
