About the Item

A stunning sculpture of a cherub holding a cornucopia, after Auguste Moreau. French, early 20th century. At 35" high, this is a beautifully substantial bronze in excellent condition. The cherub stands with one arm raised and the other outstretched, as a swirl of fabric drapes along his back. He wears a tender expression and has a lovely head of curls. The flowing lines of this piece are typical of the Art Nouveau period. Auguste Moreau was a distinguished French sculptor. He came from the celebrated Moreau family of French artists. His sculptures are renowned for their grace and beauty, each one an embodiment the elegance and sentimentality typical of 19th-century French art. He was the son of famous sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau. Auguste Moreau showed his first piece at the Salon des Artistes in France in 1861 and remained a member for around 50 years. He died in France in 1917.
