About the Item

Originally exhibited at Salon as a plaster sculpture in 1902, the model of The Sower (“La Semeuse”) depicts a young maiden walking barefoot through the fields with a large bag of seed strung around her shoulder as she plants for the future harvest. She is presented as astute and self-reliant, working with purpose and dignity despite her humble situation. Graceful motion permeates the scene, her dress swishing gently in the breeze as she is captured mid-stride. The present example is a very large and most substantial casting of the highest quality. With perfect surface rendering and exquisite detailing throughout, the work is sharp and crisp. It has spent a period of time outdoors, garnering a natural surface weathering and discoloration coupled against the acid patination original to the sculpture - as a result there is great surface depth and variation throughout. We have carefully cleaned and sealed the surfaces with wax, allowing it to be displayed in the home in a most powerful way. The base is particularly interesting, the naturalistic tumble of stones and rough ground finished in it’s original green verdigris patina, retaining the “Bronze Garanti Au Titre, Paris” seal along the left side and the “E.
