About the Item

Standing at an impressive 32 inches in height, this late 19th century bronze statue on a green marble base entitled “Marguerite” features a woman with bowed head in Renaissance dress. Her hands carry a prayer book with a clasp, and rest gently at her side. A headdress is wrapped around her hair and trails down her back. Her loosely draped robe is simple in appearance and covers a chemise adorned with scrolling and flowers. Her ensemble is further enhanced by puffed sleeves and an upturned collar that rests on her shoulders. A belt of twisted cord in a zig-zag pattern and alternating leaves hangs on her left side and holds a woven bag with draw strings. A ring with two large keys also hangs beside her bag. A striking figure with a reverence for beauty, this bronze is signed by renowned French artist Eugene Aizelin and is stamped by the nineteenth century Barbedienne Foundry in Paris. A seal at the back bears the profile of Achille Collas, associate of the Barbedienne Foundry, and is marked Reduction Mecanique, a system used in the nineteenth century for making reduced sizes of larger works. The French sculptor Eugène Aizelin was the son of Claude-Jacques Aizelïn, a draftsman. Eugene was born July 8, 1821 in Paris and died March 4, 1902. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1844 where he studied with sculptors Jules Ramey and Auguste Dumont. He participated in the Salons from 1852 to 1897 and in the Universal Exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900. He won several awards: a third place medal at the Salon of 1859, a second place medal in 1861, a third place medal at the World’s Fair of 1878. The group of sculptures representing Mignon was exhibited for the first time in plaster at the 1880 Salon, then in marble the following year and finally in bronze at the 1889 World's Fair for which he was awarded a gold medal. At the same time, he received commissions for Parisian monuments: the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Opéra Garnier, the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, the Palais du Louvre and the churches of Trinité and Saint-Roch. His works are published in bronze by the Barbedienne foundry in several dimensions. He was appointed knight of the Legion of Honor in 1867, and officer of the same order in 1892. Marguerite (1492-1549), also known as Marguerite de Navarre, was the princess of France, Queen of Navarre, and Duchess of Alencon and Berry. She was married to Henri II of Navarre. She was the sister of King Francois I, the renowned Renaissance king of France. She and her brother Francois I were responsible for the intellectual and cultural rebirth in France of their day. As an author and patron of the arts, she was an outstanding figure of the French Renaissance and the most influential woman in France during her lifetime. Marguerite befriended and protected many artists, writers, and reformers of her day who were often persecuted for their humanist views. She wrote many poems and plays. Her most notable works are a classic collection of short stories, The Heptameron, and a very intense religious poem, Miroir de l’ame pecheresse (Mirror of the Sinful Soul.) This poem was a mystical narrative of the soul as a yearning woman calling out to Christ as her father-brother-lover.

F. Barbedienne Foundry

Founded by one-time Parisian wallpaper dealer Ferdinand Barbedienne and engineer Achille Collas, one of the most revered foundries in 19th-century France began with the invention of a revolutionary 1830s-era device that could produce proportional reproductions — large or small — of sculptures. Collas’s machine, which yielded miniature likenesses of antiquities for the interiors of homes the world over, was pivotal to the success of the F. Barbedienne Foundry. The successful firm earned prestigious awards and critical acclaim and created exquisite bronze candleholders, clocks and lamps for a range of wealthy and prominent clients.

The duo first launched their company under the name Société Collas et Barbedienne, and early on, they optimized chemical processes for pigmenting and patinating their bronze statuettes. After Collas died in 1859, Barbedienne forged on alone, and the company’s name changed to simply F. Barbedienne.

Barbedienne employed more than 300 workers at that point, and the Maison created a range of furnishings and decorative objects that featured the integration of marble and ormolu accents. However, with the onset of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the foundry was forced to retrofit its molds, and the production of cannons replaced sculptures, furniture and vases.

When Ferdinand Barbedienne passed away in 1891, his nephew and heir, Gustave Leblanc, took over as president, changing the name to Leblanc-Barbedienne. Leblanc expanded production into Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, carrying on the company's legacy with monumental sculptures, and models and securing production rights for famous statues. Paul-Alexandre Dumas, an Art Nouveau maker and student of Louis Majorelle, succeeded Leblanc until the company's closing in 1952.

Barbedienne pieces had been exhibited regularly in the 19th century and were especially prevalent at Europe’s international expositions and world’s fairs, where they received numerous awards. Today, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris holds dozens of Barbedienne works in its collection, including intricate mirrors, vases and cups created by Louis-Constant Sévin at the foundry. For more than two decades, Sévin created lamps, boxes and more at Maison Barbedienne. Working alongside award-winning chaser Désiré Attarge, Sévin designed Napoleon III-era works that greatly appealed to European nobility.

Other notable artists who collaborated with Barbedienne included Eugene Aizelin, Emmanuel Fremiet, Antonin Mercié, Emile Guillemin, Edouard Lievre, Ferdinand Levillain and Auguste Rodin.
