About the Item

A large fine patinated bronze sculpture titled "Docklands Express" by Philip Blacker (1949- British), dated 1993. The sculpture features a horse called Docklands Express and jockey Peter Scudamore in action clearing a hurdle. It is signed on the base with incised initials, inscribed 93 and mounted on a stepped walnut base. This is one of eight made for the owners after the 1992 Grand National. This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. A champion at Kempton and a podium finisher at Cheltenham, Docklands Express was the 15/2 favourite for the 1992 Grand National. Despite a strong start, the bay gelding - ridden by champion jockey Peter Scudamore - fell to a nonetheless respectable fourth-place finish as Carl Llewellyn’s Party Politics came out on top. Condition: In really excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 43 x Width 54 x Depth 15 Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 5 inches x Width 1 foot, 9 inches x Depth 6 inches British sculptor Philip Blacker was born in Dorset in 1949. Blacker became a professional jockey in 1969 during which time he rode 340 winners and was victorious at many prestigious meetings throughout the UK. Blacker retired from horse racing in 1982 to concentrate on becoming a full-time professional sculptor. A former art student before his horse racing career, Blacker produced a life size sculpture of Red Rum in 1987 which was unveiled at Aintree Racecourse by the Princess Royal. Since then, Blacker has created 20 or more life size equine sculptures including Best Mate at Cheltenham, Persian Punch at Newmarket and Desert Orchid at Kempton. In 2017 Blacker produced 400 small bronze sculptures of Red Rum to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Red Rum’s third Grand National victory. Philip Blacker is one of the UK’s leading sporting sculptors with many works being held in private and corporate collections around the world. Our reference: A3190.
